#PRACTICAL MAGIX MOVIE#

Which has me thinking this movie and its mature theme is best for ages 13 and up. Jimmy tries to strangle Gillian at one point, and it’s incredibly intense. There’s also significant violence against a woman, which is definitely more problematic. And the sexual element is quite menacing. The (potentially) negative in Practical Magic there are a lot of sexual undertones, particularly between Gillian and Jimmy. Which is a powerful thing to see for the younger generation. And despite the fact that romance is a central theme in the movie, it actually ends up taking a back seat to the relationships between the women. Sally and Gillian show up for each other no matter what. The aunts help Sally raise her daughters after her husband dies. They are in each other’s corner in a way that is not often seen in movies and moreover, the multi-generational element in that gorgeous household is an inspiration. The positive: the women of the Owens family, including Sally’s two daughters Antonia (Alexandra Atrip) and Kylie (Evan Rachel Wood), are a solid unit. ‘Practical Magic’ is all about girl power. Especially when Sally’s sweet husband dies in a truck accident and Gillian’s violent boyfriend Jimmy (Goran Visnjik) also dies. Sally and Gillian believe their family is cursed when it comes to love for themselves, and it seems they may be right. Sisters Sally and Gillian have been trying to escape their family reputation, which isn’t helped by their aunts Bridget and Frances (played so beautifully by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing) cooking up love potions constantly. It follows the women of the Owens family, who have been labeled witches by the residents of their sleepy Massachussetts town for two centuries. Practical Magic was based on the Alice Hoffman book of the same name from 1995. But if you’re hoping to watch it with kids. movie starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as Sally and Gillian Owens, you are in for a treat. If you haven’t seen the 1998 Warner Bros. Witchy without being scary, fun and dark, and above all, romantic and yet mostly focused on the power of women supporting women. Overall, Practical Magic ensures a good time, and you will find yourself going back to it over and over again. No offense to all of the other very fine Halloween movies out there, but Practical Magic is in a league of its own. It’s just a fun and hilarious scene that makes you want to dance around your house with a margarita in hand. My all-time favorite scene is the “Midnight Margarita” scene! The Owens sisters and their Aunts drink margs at midnight, dance around and spill secrets. Bullock and Kidman have great chemistry and though they are phenomenal actresses alone, they really shine together in this film. Beyond that, it’s just a fun movie to watch. Throughout the entire film, you will find yourself saying “I know them from somewhere” because almost every actor is recognizable. There is magic, romance, humor and a stacked cast. This movie is so sweet and has every element needed to make a great witch film. Practical Magics jarring tonal shifts sink what little potential its offbeat story may have - though Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullocks chemistry makes a strong argument for future collaborations. With policeman Gary Hallet (Aidan Quinn) growing suspicious, the girls struggle to resurrect Angelov - and unwittingly inject his corpse with an evil spirit that threatens to end their family line. But when Gillian’s vicious boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov (Goran Visnjic), dies unexpectedly, the Owens sisters give themselves a crash course in hard magic. The 1998 film Practical Magic is a comedy, drama, fantasy film helmed by Griffin Dunne. The film starred Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest in lead roles. These two really shine in this little romcom.Ī quick synopsis: Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman), born into a magical family, have mostly avoided witchcraft themselves. There is nothing like a good Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman movie. Since it is getting closer to Halloween, I figure it’s time to watch one of the best witch movies ever made, Practical Magic. “There Are Some Things I Know For Certain: Always Throw Spilled Salt Over Your Left Shoulder, Keep Rosemary By Your Garden Gate, Plant Lavender For Luck, And Fall In Love Whenever You Can.”
